NAGRODA KARTEZJUSZA (RENÉ DESCARTES PRIZE)

Nagroda przyznawana jest zespołom badawczym z krajów członkowskich i stowarzyszonych, za wyjątkowo doniosłe wyniki naukowe osiągnięte w projektach realizowanych w ramach wspólnych badań europejskich (niekoniecznie finansowanych przez programy UE). Wnioski składać mogą koordynatorzy projektów lub osoby trzecie w ich imieniu.
Od 2004 roku nagroda przyznawana jest także za osiągnięcia w popularyzacji nauki.
Budżet konkursu wynosi 1,425 mln €. Minimalna wysokość nagrody za osiągnięcia naukowe - 200 000 €; za popularyzację - 50 000 €. Termin nadsyłania wniosków upływa 4 maja 2006r.

Plastic transistors o perating at 50 KHZ for low-end high-volume electronic circuits
Led by Dr Dago de Leeuw of Philips in Eindhoven, NL, in collaboration with Dr B. Huisman and Dr P. Herwig also from Philips, Dr R. Janssen, Dr B Langveld-Voss and Ms A. Spiering of Eindhoven University of Technology.

WINNERS 2001

On 27 November 2001 the Descartes Prize was awarded to 2 projects for outstanding scientific and technological achievements resulting from European collaborative research.

EUR 700,000 was awarded to a project on AIDS (Development of novel drugs against human immunodeficiency) lead by Professor Balzarini (K.U. Leuven, Belgium) in collaboration with teams from 6 countries (BE, CZ, ES, IT, SE, UK).

EUR 300,000 was awarded to a project on the development of asymmetric catalysts for chemical manufaturing lead by Dr. North (King's College, UK) in collaboration with teams from 5 countries (AR, DE, FR, RU, UK).

EU 2002 Descartes Prize awards EUR 1 million for 2 projects in the field of medicine and astrophysics

WINNERS 2003

European Research Commissioner Philippe Busquin awarded the EU Descartes Prize to two pan-European research teams. The first award of 700,000 euro went to a project which has carried out work on the revolutionary potential of polymeric light-emitting diodes (PLEDs) for light and image display screens. Project co-ordinated by Prof. Richard Friend of the University of Cambridge (UK) in association with researchers from Cambridge Display Technology (UK), Materia Nova in Mons (Belgium), Linköping University (Sweden), Philips Electronics Nederland in Eindhoven (the Netherlands) and Covion Organic Semiconductors in Frankfurt am Main (Germany).

The second award of 300 000 euro was presented to a project which considerably improves the efficiency of positioning and navigation systems. Project co-ordinated by Prof. Veronique Dehant of the Royal Observatory of Belgium in association with researchers from the Bureau International des Poids et Mesures in Sevres, Institut de Mécanique Céleste et de Calcul des Ephémérides in Paris and the Observatory of Paris (France), the Space Research Centre of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw (Poland), Complutense University of Madrid, the Universities of Alicante and Valladolid (Spain), Technical Universities of Dresden and Munich and GeoForschungsZentrum Potsdam (Germany), the Technical University of Vienna (Austria), Astronomical Institute of the Academy of Sciences of Czech Republic in Prague (Czech Republic), the Main Astronomical Observatory of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine in Kiev (Ukraine) and the Sternberg State Astronomical Institute of Moscow State University (Russia).

WINNERS 2004

The 2004 Descartes award ceremony took place on 1 and 2 December in the prestigious surroundings of the Prague Castle. The Prize was awarded to 2 research projects and 5 communication projects:
  1. MBAD - Mitochondrial Biogenesis, Ageing and Disease.
    (Secrets of degenerative diseases and ageing revealed in the mitochondria)
